Since entering Early Access on November 1, 2024, the sandbox roguelike Elin has slowly expanded into a worldwide success. By early January 2026, Elin had passed 350,000 copies sold on Steam, showing that developer’s fifteen-year dedication to this strange fantasy world has found a large global audience.

Rather than fading after an early spike, Elin has shown steady and healthy growth. Roughly 200,000 copies were sold within the first two months, followed by another 150,000 across 2025. Engagement has remained strong as well, with a peak of over 18,000 concurrent users and a stable daily average of around 2,000 active adventurers exploring the world.

While Elin began as a Japan-focused project, recent sales show strong growth overseas. Earlier figures showed Japan leading the audience, followed by the United States and China. New data tells a different story, with the US now making up about a third of recent sales, while Japan has dropped to around 15 percent. According to noa, this change is closely tied to Elona, the 2007 freeware game that built a loyal Western fanbase long before Elin was announced.

Much of Elin’s appeal comes from its deep and often surprising design. Set thirty years before Elona, the game mixes classic roguelike ideas like random dungeons and permanent death with a wide sandbox full of unexpected systems. It is possible to manage towns, fish in the open sea, build a music career, or deal with social systems that include tourism and family life.

Elin currently holds a “Very Positive” rating on Steam from more than 7,400 reviews, with especially high approval from English-speaking users. A big reason for this trust is open development. Although the project is mostly led by noa under the Lafrontier label, updates arrive often, along with monthly “State of the Game” posts. Recent updates, including the January 10, 2026 patch, added expanded guild features and new playable races like the Vampire, based directly on feedback from Reddit and Discord.
