According to reports from leaker MLID, Sony is reportedly planning multiple versions of the PlayStation 5, with a projected launch in late 2027. It’s worth noting, however, that this timeline could slip to 2028 due to factors such as memory chip shortages and rising production costs. Among the planned versions is a more affordable model referred to as the “PS6S”, a small-form-factor console featuring a chip codenamed “Canis.”

This entry-level variant is rumored to deliver performance roughly on par with the current PS5 (or possibly closer to the PS5 Pro in some scenarios), with an estimated price between $350 and $550 at the low end. The idea appears to be making next-gen hardware more accessible, similar to how the Xbox Series S provides a budget-friendly option in Microsoft’s lineup.

Alongside the PS6S, MLID has described a dockable PlayStation handheld also based on the Canis APU, priced around $399–$499, which could compete directly with something like the Nintendo Switch 2. The flagship PS6 would then use a more powerful “Orion” APU for higher-end performance, potentially offering up to 3x the rasterization power of the PS5 along with improved ray tracing, with pricing speculated in the $549–$699 range.

All models are expected to support backwards compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games. The lower price point might seem unusual compared to the current PlayStation 5 Pro’s pricing. However, Sony is reportedly designing the hardware from the ground up to be cheaper to manufacture than the existing PS5 lineup, thanks to a smaller form factor, optimized motherboards, and more efficient cooling.

We should keep in mind that these details come from unconfirmed leaks based on AMD documentation and industry sources, and Sony has not officially commented on PS6 plans, specs, pricing, or a release date. Hardware roadmaps can and often do change before launch.
