Saber Interactive’s 3D Realms and developer Anshar Studios presented a new trailer for Painkiller during the Galaxies Gaming Showcase, giving us a detailed look at the weapons in this modern reinterpretation of the classic action shooter. The trailer reveals devastating weapons, including some inspired by the franchise’s roots, which players will utilize when Painkiller arrives this fall on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.
In Painkiller, you wield seven distinct weapons, each with a primary and alternative fire mode, elemental effects such as fire, ice, electricity, and kinetic, and upgradable abilities for unique bonuses. For example, the Electrodriver fires rapid shurikens that ricochet off surfaces, while the Stakegun launches deadly stakes to impale enemies from a distance.
The setting is Purgatory, and you play as a sinner offered redemption by the voice of the Creator. You must fight against hordes of demons in brutal, fast-paced battles through gothic environments to stop the invasion of the fallen angel Azazel on Earth. The game supports solo play or online co-op for up to three players, and includes biomes filled with demons and colossal enemies called Nephilim.
You can also jump, use a grappling hook, and dash moves to navigate various areas, utilizing Tarot Cards to upgrade abilities and progress through levels to expand your arsenal. The game offers four playable characters: Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch, each with unique perks that enhance energy, health, power, or damage.
