“Let’s combine Tetris and city-builder games,” said Frogsong Studios. During the Nordic Game Spring 2024 event, many people understandably took interest in River Towns. Although it still doesn’t have its own Steam page, we already had the chance to try this intriguing title. The concept is simple but highly addictive, build beautiful towns along a river, connect different shapes, and restore a broken world.

Your goal is to collect as many points as possible to earn stars and progress through the game’s diverse world, making it more beautiful with every step. Just like in Tetris, buildings come in different shapes: cubes, unusual forms, and flat tiles. This allows for strategic placement of buildings and helps keep space open for new constructions. We played a small level where a river split the area, and your task was to build one color of buildings on one side and another color on the opposite side. In addition, gold deposits covering part of the terrain made construction even more challenging, requiring careful planning.

One of the most striking features is the game’s vast world, each part offering unique challenges. The game also lets you rotate buildings and zoom in, allowing you to observe in detail what’s happening inside and around your towns. On top of that, the graphics are vibrant, colorful, and pleasing, making each district feel unique. This title seems like another cozy adventure you definitely won’t want to miss.

It’s especially interesting to watch how the world changes as you build; bridges form when you place districts alongside rivers, the landscape shifts, and trees and building shapes evolve as you place more structures next to one another. With such a dynamic environment, the game delivers a deep and satisfying building experience. We recommend following the studio’s X account to stay up to date with new features and game updates.

This approach to design and gameplay makes River Towns unique and appealing to fans of strategic city-builder games, as well as those who enjoy cozy games without too much stress. We expect the game to attract a large number of players once it becomes available on Steam, so be sure to keep an eye on it.
