Hungry Couch has released a free Anniversary Update for Drill Core, expanding the roguelite mining simulator with new challenges, specialists and quality-of-life improvements. More importantly for players who found its corporate expeditions too demanding, the update introduces a dedicated Relaxed Mode.
Drill Core places players in charge of an interplanetary mining platform. Workers extract resources during the day before guards and automated turrets defend the operation from mechanical and alien threats at night. Successful contracts require careful management of miners, carriers, technology and the vulnerable platform core.
The Anniversary Update gives experienced managers additional ways to chase profit. New bounties offer optional challenges with extra rewards, while a new platform building distributes sponsored corporate tasks. Specialists can also be recruited during contracts, potentially giving struggling expeditions a useful advantage.
Relaxed Mode moves in the opposite direction by reducing the overall intensity. It should be a welcome addition for anyone who enjoyed the management and mining but found the escalating nighttime defence difficult to balance. Difficulty options rarely harm a strategy game, particularly one containing several overlapping systems that new players need time to understand.
Three platform skins, additional game-speed settings, expanded statistics and improved tutorials round out the update. These may sound less exciting than a major new biome, but faster play and clearer information can make a substantial difference in a management game built for repeat runs.
The Anniversary Update was revealed during tinyBuild Connect and is available now as a free PC update through Steam. Drill Core itself is also available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, although the new update has only been confirmed for PC at this stage.
