German indie studio Paintbucket Games, known for insightful and thought-provoking games, has announced their new title The Darkest Files. As a spiritual successor to their award-winning game Through The Darkest of Times, this historical investigative and courtroom game will be available for PC and Mac starting March 25, 2025. A demo version of the game is already available on Steam.

The Darkest Files is set in post-war Germany in the 1950s, where you take on the role of the young and ambitious prosecutor Esther Katz. Through the investigation of unsolved crimes from the Nazi era, based on real events, you will interrogate witnesses, look for clues, and try to prove your theory in court. Esther joins the team of historical figure Fritz Bauer, who, as a state prosecutor in Frankfurt, investigated similar cases in real life.

Jörg Friedrich from Paintbucket Games highlighted that the goal of The Darkest Files is not only to create an exciting game but also to tell the story of Fritz Bauer and his team of brave prosecutors who fought for justice despite numerous obstacles: “This story has become terrifyingly relevant in today’s time, when the rule of law and democratic institutions are under unprecedented pressure. We hope to inspire players to take action themselves.”

The game offers a deep exploration of historical cases through interviews with relatives, witnesses, and suspects. You will be able to immerse yourself in witness testimonies through Esther’s inner sight, interactively reliving the events from the perspective of the person giving the statement. After gathering evidence, you must reconstruct your theory of the crime on the crime scene blueprint and present it in court.

The Darkest Files uses beautiful 3D graphics with a cell-shading effect, giving it the visual appearance of a walking pulp comic strip from the 1950s. Additionally, full English voice synchronization further enriches the atmosphere.
