Last Tuesday, specifically April 22nd, the New York-based indie publisher Top Hat Studios held a showcase in collaboration with The Media Indie Exchange (The MIX). The half-hour event revealed over 20 indie games, with Kyle Thompson, the creator behind the successful Metroidvania titles Crypt Custodian and Islets, announcing a new project.

In addition to the aforementioned announcement, the Top Hat Studios Showcase also announced a physical edition of Crypt Custodian for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, set to release on August 29, 2025. Meanwhile, the new game announcement showcased a blood-red moon illuminating a cabin with a red glow, followed by a lush, forested Metroidvania stage complete with platforms.

It concluded with a striking image of a red, clawed hand adorned with gold jewelry reaching upwards, suggesting a darker, mysterious story. The title and gameplay details were not revealed, but Top Hat Studios announced that the game will be fully unveiled this summer.

The summer reveal of Kyle Thompson’s new game will show whether it will build upon his Metroidvania style or take a new direction. The forested environment in the announcement suggests a familiar structure, but the darker iconography hints at a gloomier tone, perhaps blending the charming atmosphere of Crypt Custodian with something more eerie. Fans can expect precise platforming, detailed level design, and atmospheric music, based on Thompson’s previous work.
