Amidst endless speculation and rumors, the release date of Hollow Knight: Silksong remains a mystery to millions of fans. With Gamescom 2025 running from August 20-24, players are wondering if the highly anticipated metroidvania might be shadow-dropped. While a surprise release wouldn’t be a dramatic end to the six-year wait, a closer look at the facts suggests a shadow drop might be stretched, but not impossible.
One of the biggest reasons for the hope is the confirmed presence of a playable demo at Microsoft’s Xbox booth during Gamescom. This will be the first time the public can play the game since E3 2019, suggesting the game is in a very polished state. Demos often come right before a game’s release, and a surprise launch would definitely take advantage of the event’s excitement.
Further fueling the fire are recent updates to the game’s Steam page in June 2025, which included changes to language settings and the removal of age restrictions on trailers. These small changes are often seen as signs that a game is getting ready for release. An insider also predicted that the game would launch before the end of summer 2025, which keeps Gamescom in the running as a potential launchpad. The game’s confirmed day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass and heavy promotion by Microsoft also suggest a major, coordinated release is coming.
However, there are strong arguments against a shadow drop. Team Cherry are known for being very quiet and cautious with their announcements. A sudden, unannounced release would go against their usual communication style. Some fans also believe that the Gamescom demo might not be a sign of a finished game but rather a small, curated section, similar to the E3 2019 demo. The game’s absence from recent major events like the Nintendo Direct and Summer Game Fest has also lowered expectations for a sudden release.
The long development of Silksong has turned into a cultural phenomenon, with fans constantly looking for clues and creating memes. A shadow drop would be an exciting way to end the long wait, but it also carries risks, like alienating fans who might want to avoid spoilers from the demo. Given the game’s mythical status, a well-marketed release with a clear date might be the better strategy to rebuild interest and properly celebrate the game’s launch.
