A new independent studio HeartLoop Games has been announced in Montreal, founded by former Brass Lion Entertainment lead gameplay designer Osama Dorias. The studio, which aims to blend old-school arcade charm with modern roguelike elements, is already at work on its debut title Poly Fighter.

Dorias will serve as the creative director for HeartLoop Games. He is joined by three other co-founders, including strategy and product director Elaine Gusella, who previously held a game and marketing director position at Artifact. The team’s first project, Poly Fighter, is a singleplayer roguelike fighting game currently in development for PC.

“Our approach is simple: build things step-by-step, share them with players early, and stay flexible so the game can evolve into the best version of itself”, a press release from the studio stated.

In April, Dorias former employer, Brass Lion Entertainment, laid off at least 13 employees as part of a “realignment” of its workforce. Dorias departed the studio shortly after. At the time of the layoffs, Brass Lion Entertainment released a statement explaining the difficult decision was necessary to “realign our team around the strategy for the action-RPG we have in development,” and noted that it was unable to keep on several talented developers.
