Vital Shell is one of those small releases that quietly lands and then refuses to let go. Developed and published entirely by solo creator MarvinWizard, this science-fantasy top-down arena shooter was built with a console-first mindset before making its way to PC.
The game launched on Steam on January 7, 2026 and is currently sitting at 99% positive reviews from 201 of them. Many have praised its fast and addictive loop, along with its visual style that blends low-poly PlayStation-era models with Dreamcast-like flair.
The main structure revolves around surviving wave after wave of enemies inside strange, broken dream worlds. Locations range from Island Ruins to Ice Caverns, spread across five stages that grow more intense over time.
Between waves, upgrades can be chosen to shape the build, leading to runs that usually last around 20 minutes before ending in a major boss fight. The overall feel sits somewhere between horde survival games like Vampire Survivors, the wave pacing of Brotato, and the deep mech customization found in Armored Core, all wrapped in a roguelite format.
