Indie developers continue to find massive success on PC, and two recent releases are proving that the right concept can spread quickly across streaming platforms and social media. Both Super Battle Golf and Roadside Research have become breakout hits on Steam, attracting hundreds of thousands of players in just weeks after launch.
The bigger of the two success stories so far is Super Battle Golf, developed by Brimstone and published by Oro Interactive. According to GameDiscoverCo, The chaotic multiplayer game passed 500,000 copies sold only nine days after release and is now approaching 800,000 units sold, with daily peak player counts between 15,000 and 20,000. Interestingly, the game’s highest concurrent player peak came more than a week after launch, often a sign of a viral hit gaining momentum through streamers and word of mouth.
Unlike traditional golf games, Super Battle Golf thrives on chaos. The basic idea is simple: everyone plays at the same time, using vehicles, physics interactions, and even explosive weapons to interfere with each other. The result is a competitive party experience that feels closer to the unpredictable energy of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe than a traditional sports simulation. Its accessible design and low $8 price point have helped it spread quickly among friend groups and content creators.
Another indie title seeing strong results is Roadside Research, developed by Cybernetic Walrus and published by Oro Interactive. Since launching in February, the cooperative simulation game has sold around 396,000 copies. The game’s unusual concept, aliens disguised as humans running a roadside gas station, immediately grabbed attention and helped it build strong wishlists long before release.
The gameplay mixes chaotic teamwork with resource management, allowing up to four players to operate the station while hiding their extraterrestrial identities. Like many modern viral indie games, the premise is easy to understand and entertaining to watch, which has helped the title gain traction with streamers.
