Legacy of Kain: Ascendance has officially launched on March 31, 2026, marking the long-awaited return of the iconic gothic franchise after more than two decades. Developed by Bit Bot Media and published by Crystal Dynamics, the new entry arrives on PC and consoles, reintroducing players to the dark world of Nosgoth through a 2D action-platformer format.
The game “promises” fluid combat, vertical traversal, and a narrative-driven experience featuring multiple protagonists. However, early reception has been largely negative, with players on Steam expressing disappointment over the game’s execution. Much of the criticism has focused on the combat system, which many describe as repetitive and lacking depth, quickly becoming monotonous.
Additional concerns include awkward movement mechanics, inconsistent platforming, and confusing level design that disrupts the overall flow. Boss encounters have also been singled out as underwhelming, often relying on simplistic gimmicks rather than offering meaningful challenge, while enemy behavior has been criticized as poorly balanced and frustrating.
Despite these shortcomings, some elements of Ascendance have been praised, particularly its atmospheric pixel art visuals and strong voice acting, which help capture the series’ signature gothic tone. Yet even these strengths have proven divisive, with some fans criticizing the story for relying on controversial retcons and connections to expanded media that alter established canon.
The game’s relatively short length, with some playthroughs lasting under five hours, has further fueled criticism that it falls short of expectations for a major franchise revival. While Ascendance succeeds in recapturing parts of the series’ aesthetic identity, many reviewers argue it lacks the depth and polish needed to stand alongside its predecessors.
