Solo developer targim has partnered with Retrovibe to release Cop Bastard this October. The unapologetically direct retro shooter has also received an upgraded Steam demo prepared for Boomstock 2026.

Set in early-1990s Osaka, Cop Bastard puts players in the role of a hard-edged detective fighting through tightly packed corridors filled with yakuza. Its design deliberately removes many systems found in modern shooters: there are no skill trees, perks, weapon upgrades or puzzles slowing down the action.

Instead, survival comes down to movement, accurate shooting and knowing when to change weapons. Players can even spit in an enemy’s face, because subtle de-escalation clearly isn’t part of this particular detective’s training.

The updated demo makes combat faster and more flexible. Reloads can now be cancelled by switching weapons, while new cinematic finishers allow players to continue firing into falling enemies. The enemy lineup has expanded with explosive kamikaze attackers and heavily armoured opponents wearing iron masks.

Several practical improvements have also arrived. Players can completely rebind their controls, adjust the crosshair size and use a controller. The developers have additionally reworked the interface, improved visual and audio effects, adjusted enemy behaviour and added every language planned for the finished version.

Cop Bastard will launch for PC through Steam and GOG, although a specific October date has not yet been announced. The updated demo is available now, offering a fairly clear indication of whether its concentrated mixture of gunfire, gore and 1990s action-film excess is for you.
