Penny’s Big Breakaway, the upcoming 3D platforming game from the developers behind the successful 2017 Sonic Mania, is scheduled for release in early 2024. A new trailer, featured during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted event, provides additional insight into the game, including several of its main characters.

Penny’s Big Breakaway looks like it draws inspiration from classic platformers, putting you in the colorful shoes of the main character to explore worlds and collect items. However, its key feature is Penny’s semi-sentient yo-yo, which has multiple uses as a weapon, a swinging rope, a vehicle, or an improvised helicopter.

You’ll mainly be using that yo-yo to evade a small army of penguins sent after you by the boss, Emperor Eddie. Apparently, he wasn’t too pleased with Penny’s audition for the court jester, so he ordered his flightless followers to capture you. It’s up to you to clear Penny’s name while unraveling the mystery of what turned your ordinary yo-yo into a ravenous, snack-eating creature.

Other characters you will encounter and battle in closed arenas make up a diverse group: the fanged sailor Sheila, the flying Mr. Q, the puppeteer Tabu, and the hammer-wielding judge Rufus. The game is being developed by Evening Star, a new studio founded by former members of the team who worked on Sonic Mania, one of the best-received Sonic games.

Penny’s Big Breakaway will be released for PC via Steam Early Access.
