On Monday, June 17, South African studio Donderbos Games released AVOID on Steam, introducing an innovative twist to the endless runner genre. This first-person game features a unique mechanic that allows players to rotate the world around them to avoid obstacles.
“The unique 90-degree world rotation mechanic seems simple at first, but you quickly discover creative ways to use it,” says Henk Scheepers, developer of AVOID and founder of Donderbos Games. “For example, you can get more airtime from a jump if you time your rotations correctly, or save yourself from a deadly fall by rotating the world so you drop back onto a platform you can land on.”
In addition to the world-rotation mechanic, AVOID includes standard moves expected from this genre, such as dashing and sliding. The real joy lies in combining these abilities in the correct sequence to overcome the many obstacles the game throws at you. Ultimately, conquering a tough challenge after numerous attempts is extremely rewarding.
