The Awesome Indies showcase at Gamescom 2025 has revealed Beyond These Stars, a city-building and strategy game from developer Balancing Monkey Games and publisher Hooded Horse. The game is set to release on PC via Steam later in 2025 and tasks players with an unusual mission: building and managing a civilization on the back of Kewa, a massive, sentient Space Whale traveling through the galaxy.
The game draws from the developer’s previous experience with the cozy-themed city-builder Before We Leave, but aims for a grander scale, which they describe as a “universe builder”. Players must build outposts, manage complex supply chains, and meet the needs of their people, called “Peeps”, all while ensuring the well-being of the Space Whale. The core challenge lies in maintaining a harmonious and symbiotic relationship with the living creature that serves as your home.
The gameplay expands beyond the whale’s back, allowing you to establish outposts on new planets to gather essential resources. Beyond resource management, you will also encounter alien species and unravel the cosmic mysteries of your ancestors and the Space Whales’ origins.
