Beyond the Board is an upcoming single-player puzzle game developed by Sokpop Collective. This game transforms the classic rules and structure of chess into an immersive, abstract journey. It is planned for release on PC via Steam, and it has been announced that a demo version will be available soon. The trailer was shown during The MIX | Kinda Funny Spring Showcase.

It takes the familiar 8×8 chessboard, strips it down to its minimalist core, and then rebuilds it through challenging puzzle mechanics. Each of your moves leads you deeper into a changing, enigmatic world where the board itself adapts. Unlike standard chess, the environment reacts to your moves: tiles shift and obstacles appear, which then reveal “hidden rifts” in the foundation of the game.

The visual style is stark and minimalist, relying on clean lines, muted colors, and a surreal, almost alien aesthetic. The trailer shows a dynamic board that looks “alive,” with tiles transforming and decaying. This perfectly aligns with Sokpop’s reputation for experimental, visually striking games that prioritize atmosphere over complexity.
