We love good and inspiring stories about solo developers, so Lente should be proud of everything she has achieved so far working on the cozy and charming game Spilled! It’s a game about cleaning up waste from the ocean: you recycle, earn coins, upgrade your boat, rinse, and repeat.
It’s fascinating how someone can live on a boat, go about their daily life, and simultaneously develop a game about oil spills. Lente’s journey was quite long, which is why she decided to launch her own Kickstarter campaign after a year of work on the game. The game was fully funded within 12 hours, and you can still grab your copy while it’s at an affordable price.
If you love pixel-style graphics and art, Spilled! might be the perfect game for you. It features 8 areas, each larger and with more waste than the last. After completely cleaning one area, you can move on to the next. The core loop of the game involves upgrading your boat—getting a bigger collector, a larger tank, or improving speed. Additionally, each area introduces a new challenge, such as pushing plastics to a recycling center or cleaning oil from the ground, providing diverse gameplay experiences.
There are a total of 16 animals to discover and rescue. While it may not offer a high amount of replayability and might not hold your attention over a long period, its unique style and simple gameplay are the main reasons why it has the potential for success.
Spilled! will likely be available on PC & Mac (Steam) later this year.
