11 bit studios has released a new developer update for Frostpunk 1886, the upcoming Unreal Engine-based reimagining of its popular city survival game. In the update, director Maciej Sulecki guided us through the ambitious vision for the title, highlighting improved mechanics and a significant visual upgrade intended to deepen the player’s emotional investment in the frozen world.

The core goal of Frostpunk 1886 is to make the brutal stakes of managing New London more immediate and impactful. A key area of improvement is the detail and expressiveness of the city’s inhabitants. Citizens are now driven by improved animations and motion capture, resulting in smarter, more visually expressive behaviors where, as the developers put it, “every shiver counts.” Visually, the entire Frostland environment and the city itself have been overhauled.

Furthermore, the team has overhauled building textures, making the fragile, flickering civilization feel more lived-in and concrete. These visual and mechanical improvements collectively work toward intensifying the game’s core theme: the difficult moral and tactical decisions required to manage humanity’s last bastion against perpetual winter.

Frostpunk 1886 will release on PC via Steam in 2027.
