A brand new high-profile video game set in The Lord of the Rings universe is currently in development and is set to be partially funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), according to sources close to the project. The investment is anticipated to be around $100 million, though the final figures may fluctuate slightly.
The funding deal, which has reportedly been in the works since last year, is said to involve multiple parties, including Embracer, the parent company that acquired the rights to the Lord of the Rings IP for video games in 2022. While the agreement has yet to be officially signed due to the complexity of the moving parts, sources indicate it could be finalized as early as next week.
Specific details about the game’s core mechanics are still scarce, but sources confirm it will be a third-person action game. Its design aims for a massive, high-quality experience meant to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy.” This suggests an ambitious, large-scale, open-world or open-structure project.
Both Embracer and Revenge declined to comment when contacted, adhering to a general policy of not discussing “rumors or speculation.” Despite the official silence, the combination of a major financial backing from the ADIO and the direct comparison to one of the industry’s largest recent successes indicates that the next major Lord of the Rings game is aiming for the top tier of the action genre.
