During the tinyBuild Connect showcase, one surprise particularly resonated: the first closed playtest for the RPG adventure Of Ash and Steel is starting soon. This is a game that combines old-school RPG mechanics with a modern approach. Sign-ups are now open via Steam, and tinyBuild hinted that the playtest will begin “very soon,” potentially even before Steam Next Fest.

In Of Ash and Steel, you start your story from scratch. With no quest markers or hand-holding, exploration genuinely feels like a real adventure: you’ll find hidden treasures, embark on side missions, or confront various bosses. The world reacts to your progress; as you rise from a pauper to a respected hero, NPCs will acknowledge your status.

Combat is deliberate and based on three stances that change the way you wield swords, axes, or bows. Timing is crucial in this game to land precise hits or perhaps dodge them at the right moment. You’ll also be accompanied by a specific skill board that helps you unlock various moves, learn how to survive in the wilderness, or pick up a trade for crafting equipment.

The game’s atmosphere is top-notch, with a dynamic day-night cycle, changing weather, and ambient sounds like rustling leaves or distant birdsong that draw you into its medieval world, while NPCs carry out their routines.
