A few days ago, Respair Games announced their upcoming RTS title Age of Respair, heavily inspired by the Stronghold series. We spoke with Peter Vlaslov to learn more about the game and its expected release. Here’s what he shared.

“Our goal is to capture the essence of the original Stronghold games and Stronghold: Crusader. We’ll closely monitor playtest feedback to see what players enjoy most, but we’re especially excited about the large maps and exploration opportunities offered by the fog of war in each region,” Vlaslov explained when asked about the game’s inspirations. Based on his enthusiasm, fans can look forward to a familiar style of gameplay.

“Most battles will focus on castle sieges rather than open-field combat, making siege warfare a crucial gameplay element,” he added, pointing to a shift from games like Age of Empires. Siege tactics will be essential, and many players will surely be eager to see the scale of these battles and how combat unfolds.

“The game has been in development for more than a year, and every team member brings over nine years of experience. We chose Unreal Engine 5 for its flexibility and our familiarity with it, and we’ve also implemented custom solutions like our own pathfinding system,” Vlaslov concluded. Although the project is relatively young, Age of Respair is shaping up to be a passionate endeavor that Respair Games is excited to bring to life.

“There’s still no specific release date since we’re focused on delivering high quality without rushing. We plan to begin closed testing early next year,” Vlaslov said.
