Shueisha Games announced a new ambitious game, Chronoscript: The Endless End, during yesterday’s Sony State of Play. It is a completely original 2D action-adventure developed by DeskWorks Inc. The announcement trailer highlighted its hand-drawn art style and a unique dual-world design where space will shift from 2D to 3D and back again.
You play as an editor who, after accepting a strange assignment in a remote castle, becomes trapped within a manuscript. The central mystery revolves around a thousand-year-old story that refuses to end. To break the cycle and bring the narrative to its final chapter, you must explore the world of ink, uncover hidden truths, and confront the manuscript’s inhabitants.
While most of the action takes place in the illustrated 2D world, which merges classic 2D action-adventure with exploration and intense combat, Chronoscript pushes boundaries with cinematic 3D elements. These 3D renditions dynamically burst forth in cutscenes, map reveals, and enemy attacks that come from outside the frame of the pages. Moreover, brief moments even pull us into the “real” 3D world through ink rifts, but the journey always returns to the pages of the manuscript.
According to lead artist Nam Nambi, the team is dedicated to creating fluid, satisfying controls and fast-paced action. This feeling is complemented by the fact that every frame, from the characters to the almost 100 unique enemies, is hand-drawn, giving the world a unique, unsettling vibrancy.
Chronoscript: The Endless End will be released in 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Steam.
