Task Force Admiral Brings 1942 Naval Battles to Life in 3D

A return to classic naval strategy is on the horizon as Drydock Dreams Games, together with publisher MicroProse, confirms that Task Force Admiral Vol.1: American Carrier Battles will enter Steam Early Access on January 27, 2026. Set during the tense Pacific campaigns of 1942, the game places you command of a U.S. Navy carrier task force, where every decision can shape the outcome of history.

Rather than following modern strategy trends, the project looks back to the deep naval simulations of the 1990s, drawing inspiration from titles such as Carriers at War and Pacific Air War. That old-school design is paired with a modern 3D physics-driven engine that removes the need for separate maps or turn phases. Limited reports, delayed messages, and incomplete intel recreate the fog of war faced by real commanders at sea.

Recon flights must be planned carefully, fighter patrols positioned at the right time, and strike groups armed with the correct weapons for each mission. Battles run in pausable real time, allowing full control without losing the tension of live combat. The camera can pull back for high-level planning or zoom down to the deck to watch aircraft launches, flak fire, and torpedo attacks in detail. Recent updates even allow direct control of fighter planes, making it possible to jump into the cockpit during key moments and engage in close-range dogfights.

Ships and aircraft from both American and Japanese forces are modeled with careful research, reflecting real-world strengths and limits. A free demo is already available on Steam and focuses on the Battle of the Coral Sea, recreating the clash between Task Force 17 and Japanese Carrier Division 5. The Early Access launch will expand on this foundation with full Coral Sea and Midway scenarios.
