The Eternal Life of Goldman is a new 2D platformer from Weappy Studio, the small team behind This Is the Police. The game is a return to classic 16-bit platformers from the SNES era, focusing on precise platforming. It is not a Metroidvania with lots of backtracking. Instead, players control an elderly man who can use his upgradable cane to strike enemies and platforms.
The game’s true charm lies in its stunning animated art style. This platformer features a meticulously handcrafted look created through frame-by-frame painting to achieve the feel of an animated film, an impressive accomplishment. The story draws on Greek, Jewish, and Mesopotamian folklore to tell a tale about life and death.
The Eternal Life of Goldman is the result of years of work by people who love and appreciate the same cartoons, comics, and games:
“We wanted to make an uncompromising 2D game of incredible beauty, so we returned to the roots of the genre and chose the hardest possible path, carefully drawing, coloring, and animating everything by hand using classic frame-by-frame techniques. We didn’t skip a single detail, and the results are worth it. In The Eternal Life of Goldman, not a single room or landscape is the same. Every location, every object, every character, every visual effect, everything is carefully planned and executed down to the finest detail,” said the developers at Weappy.
The game does not have a release date yet, but it is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam).
