Retro gaming enthusiasts looking for a better way to organize their game libraries may want to take a look at RomM, a free, open-source and self-hosted ROM management platform that combines library organization, metadata collection and browser-based emulation into a single application.

Designed for users with large collections of classic games, RomM provides a modern web interface capable of scanning ROM folders and automatically retrieving game information from databases such as IGDB, Screenscraper and MobyGames. The software can populate libraries with artwork, descriptions, release dates, ratings and other metadata, while also integrating with RetroAchievements and SteamGridDB for achievements and custom artwork.

One of RomM’s biggest strengths is its broad platform support. The application is compatible with more than 400 gaming systems and can manage not only standard ROM files but also more complex collections containing multi-disc games, DLC, patches, modifications and digital manuals.

Beyond organization, RomM also allows users to launch supported games directly from a web browser through integrations with emulators such as EmulatorJS and Ruffle, making it possible to access retro libraries across multiple devices without installing dedicated frontend software.

The application includes additional quality-of-life features such as automatic tagging based on filenames, custom collections and playlists, controlled library sharing with friends, and compatibility with third-party applications including Playnite and several mobile clients.

RomM is typically deployed using Docker, making installation relatively straightforward for users familiar with self-hosted software, although it may require more initial setup than commercial alternatives such as LaunchBox.
