RPCS3 Can Now Play 75% of the PlayStation 3 Library Without Game-Breaking Issues

Sony will close the PlayStation 3 digital storefront in July 2027, ending more than two decades of support for the console. Players will no longer be able to buy digital PS3 games after the closure, although previously purchased content should remain available to download for the “foreseeable future.”

The decision creates another major concern for game preservation. Once the store disappears, several digital-only releases could become impossible to purchase through official channels. Physical copies of other games may remain available, but limited supply could cause prices to rise significantly.

Meanwhile, the RPCS3 emulator is making steady progress towards preserving the PS3 library on PC. Its developers report that 75% of the console’s games are now considered fully playable, meaning they can be completed without game-breaking glitches.

Another 22% can run but still suffer from problems that affect the overall experience. Fewer than 2% of tested games currently fail to progress beyond the main menu. “RPCS3 continues to be improved with new features, fixes, and optimisations, bringing it ever closer to preserving the entire PS3 library,” the emulator’s developers said on X.

RPCS3’s work is becoming increasingly important as official access to PS3 games continues to shrink. Sony has yet to provide full native backwards compatibility for the console’s library on modern PlayStation hardware, leaving emulation as one of the few practical ways of keeping many of these games playable.
