The developers behind Wii64 have released Beta 1.4, marking the Nintendo 64 emulator’s first major update in more than five years. The new version introduces a wide range of performance, stability and compatibility improvements for homebrew users running N64 games on the Nintendo Wii, GameCube and Wii U in vWii mode.

One of the update’s biggest focuses is improving overall performance. On the Wii, the developers have reduced the emulator’s Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) memory footprint, while GameCube users benefit from a new Tiny TLB cache designed to improve memory handling. The dynamic recompiler has also been refined with block-level generated functions, reducing its overall size while improving efficiency in more demanding games.

GameCube support has been expanded with SD2SP2 storage compatibility, offering faster loading and reducing memory paging issues on compatible hardware. Meanwhile, players using Wii U’s virtual Wii mode receive several platform-specific fixes, including proper GamePad HOME button functionality that returns directly to the emulator menu and corrected display aspect ratios through DMCU improvements.

The update also addresses compatibility with specific Nintendo 64 titles. Visual fixes have been implemented for games such as Pilotwings 64 and WinBack, while broader memory leak fixes and heap management improvements are intended to provide longer, more stable gameplay sessions.

Wii64 Beta 1.4 continues to offer multiple emulation options, allowing users to choose between a high-compatibility interpreter or a faster dynamic recompiler depending on their needs. The emulator also supports z64, v64 and n64 ROM formats, customizable controller layouts and multiple graphics plugins, including Rice GFX and glN64, giving users flexibility to optimize compatibility and performance on a game-by-game basis.
