The Forever Project Aims to Bring Physical Games Back for Indie Developers

Independent game developers will soon have a new way to bring their games to physical media thanks to The Forever Project, a new initiative created through a partnership between boutique publisher 33 Games and transmedia studio Beyond The Pixels. The service aims to make premium physical releases more accessible by removing the high costs and complexity traditionally associated with physical publishing.

Scheduled to launch in August 2026, The Forever Project will offer a self-service platform that enables indie developers and publishers to create collector-quality physical editions for PC and Mac using USB Cartridge packaging. The goal is to give creators greater ownership of their products while expanding sales opportunities beyond digital storefronts.

Instead of relying solely on platforms such as Steam, developers will be able to sell physical editions directly through their own websites, crowdfunding campaigns, gaming conventions, and selected retail partners.

“We want to bring back a time when buying a game was more than just a transaction, it was an experience,” said HaZ Dulull, Founder and CEO of Beyond The Pixels. “Physical games create lasting memories. They become collectables you can proudly display, share with friends, and keep forever – something digital simply can’t replicate.”

The partnership has already seen promising results. A Kickstarter campaign for Astro Burn, a modern retro shooter from Beyond The Pixels, reached 156% of its funding goal, highlighting continued demand for collector-focused physical releases.

Steven Charles, CEO of 33 Games, believes the initiative gives independent creators greater control over how their games reach players: “Independent developers face an increasingly difficult challenge standing out in today’s digital marketplaces. Our partnership with Beyond The Pixels changes that by making premium physical publishing accessible to indie developers.”

Developers interested in joining the program can register through The Forever Project website ahead of its official launch later this summer.
