Yogscast Games is preparing to release another card-based title The Royal Writ, a humorous medieval deck-builder where you command an oddball army of lizards, insects and other quirky fighters in a blend of roguelike, strategy and deck-building elements. The game, developed by Hungarian studio Save Sloth Studios, is set to launch on August 7 this year for PC via Steam.
Battles take place on procedurally generated battlefields with one to three lanes, requiring strategic card placement that leverages strengths and multiplier modifiers for damage. A permadeath mechanic raises the stakes, every lost card becomes part of your kingdom’s growing legend.
The Royal Writ offers two game modes, each with unique cards, bosses and strategic challenges. Between battles, you can upgrade your army through events such as horse races, where betting boosts your cards, or a visit to the dentist, where you can sacrifice cards to optimize your deck. Battlefields are filled with hazards like anthills, spike pits and fungal fields, but clever use of flying or aquatic creatures can turn the tide.
