It’s official. Xbox has confirmed that its annual Developer Direct showcase will return in January 2026. The news was shared by Microsoft Gaming Content and Studios president Matt Booty. What Xbox has not revealed yet is what exactly will be shown during the event. What we do know is that this Direct comes at a very important time, as Xbox prepares for its 25th anniversary year, alongside major milestones like Bethesda’s 40th anniversary and Blizzard’s 35th.

Booty did share a few hints, saying: “We’ve got a lot of stuff that we’re shipping next year. I will tell you that Playground Games is going to be in the Dev Direct, but we’ll have more stuff next year to ship than we can fit into one show.” This suggests the showcase could help rebuild momentum for Xbox after a quieter appearance at The Game Awards 2025, where big first-party titles like Fable, Forza, Gears of War, and Halo were absent.

Playground Games is the only studio officially confirmed so far. The UK-based team is best known for the Forza Horizon series, which has led to strong speculation about Forza Horizon 6 being revealed. Insider Klobrille has described the game as almost guaranteed, given the studio’s long experience with the franchise.

At the same time, Playground is also working on the Fable reboot, built on an upgraded version of the ForzaTech engine. While both games could launch in 2026, the chances of Fable appearing at the Direct are seen as 50/50 due to the studio handling two large projects.

Beyond Playground Games, fans are already expecting updates on other Xbox projects. These include deeper looks at State of Decay 3, news on Arkane’s Marvel’s Blade, possible surprise releases similar to Hi-Fi Rush, and even rumors of Gears of War: E-Day or a Prototype revival from Activision. All of this fits into Xbox’s strong 2026 plans, with a focus on day-one Game Pass releases and wider multi-platform support.
