Hyper Light Breaker was released in Early Access on Steam last month but was met with harsh criticism and negative reviews. The game soon lost its player base, with only 30 to 70 people playing it occasionally each day. The highest number of concurrent players (5,230) was recorded immediately after the official release. What was the problem? Perhaps this review best describes the situation: “This is a big mess of tangled mechanics that interfere with each other.”
However, the developers did not give up. They recently released a huge update in which they attempted to listen to feedback and improve various aspects of the game. This brought hope to many, and the player count jumped to 300 to try out all the changes related to the game. The question now is how much they will manage to retain players for the long run. Community and PR Manager Yiyi Zhang admitted to the difficult start in a conversation with GamesRadar+, but she emphasized the importance of player feedback.
“Some of our negative reviews have also been the most helpful and impactful. They helped us to recognize improvements related to Quality of Life features, accessibility, and performance early on. Some criticisms were extremely detailed, almost in essay form, with breakdowns of all the ways we could improve the game’s onboarding, mechanics, storytelling, and overall gameplay experience. That kind of feedback is invaluable.”
Zhang also highlighted the challenges of testing the game before its official release. “PC players use the most diverse hardware, so it’s simply not feasible for developers to test every single detail,” she explained. Furthermore, developers and playtesters, who are already deeply familiar with the game, can inadvertently make the game too challenging for new players.
Despite the difficult start, Hyper Light Breaker managed to retain a “dedicated” player base. “My biggest fear was that we would release the game and it would immediately fall into obscurity,” Zhang admitted. “That absolutely hasn’t happened, and that’s wonderful. From day one, our players have shown how much they truly care about the Hyper Light universe.”
However, the numbers tell a somewhat different story. While the game hasn’t completely fallen into oblivion, it will be very difficult to re-attract the necessary player base willing to invest their time in this game. The current state of the game is not promising, although recent reviews are positive (they have risen to 70% positive, but the overall review status is still “mixed”). It will take more time for this title to climb to the desired level.
