Elroy and the Aliens is a fun, old-school point-and-click adventure developed by the Slovenian indie studio Motiviti and released on Steam on April 2nd. The game is hand-drawn and exudes classic charm, reminiscent of beloved titles like Day of the Tentacle or Space Quest of yesteryear. If you enjoy those games, you will surely love this one too.
Elroy and the Aliens is set in an alternative 1993. You play as Elroy Deluna, a resourceful rocket engineer who loves fixing things, and Peggie Wolfe, an intrepid reporter who craves excitement. The story begins in the small town of Slope City when Elroy’s failed rocket test ends with the rocket crashing directly into his apartment, revealing a mysterious device. The device displays a hologram suggesting that Elroy’s father, a famous archaeologist who went missing 18 years ago, might be alive.
What starts as a search for the truth soon turns into a wild space adventure. You will explore two planets, visit 60 different locations, and meet over 60 characters, all fully voice-acted, including the aliens. The main question the game poses is: “How far would you go to save someone you love?” Studio Motiviti successfully blends an emotional story with humor, ancient secrets, and fun pop-culture references. Throughout the game, you will alternate playing between Elroy and Peggie, and together they will uncover a great cosmic mystery connected to the enigmatic Haani Pentagon, creating an exciting combination of science fiction and a retro ’90s atmosphere.
The gameplay remains faithful to the classic point-and-click style, which is great news for fans of the genre. You will explore vibrant, hand-drawn locations, collect items, and combine them to solve puzzles. Some puzzles are straightforward, while others will truly make you think, but they are always fair. One of the game’s best challenges is deciphering the alien language; it’s tough, but fun, and doesn’t take too long. If you get stuck, you can always click on objects and hear helpful comments from Elroy or Peggie. There is an optional feature to highlight interactive areas, so you will never waste time randomly clicking on the screen.
