Professor Layton and The New World of Steam is an upcoming puzzle adventure to be published by Level-5, expected to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, alongside a parallel release on the original Nintendo Switch. As the eighth main installment in the Professor Layton series and a direct sequel to Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, the game marks the return of Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton.

The game was first announced two years ago during a Nintendo Direct presentation, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, with a short teaser showing Layton walking through an industrial steampunk setting. However, during the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, when the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled, it was officially confirmed that Professor Layton and The New World of Steam will be available on both consoles in 2025.

The game’s plot is set one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future and follows Layton and Luke in Steam Bison, a fictional American city powered by advanced steam technology that surpasses the industrial might of London. Luke, now known as “Detective Luke” for solving local mysteries, invites Layton to investigate a mysterious incident. Their reunion takes place after Luke’s departure in the epilogue of the original trilogy.

The New World of Steam retains the recognizable blend of point-and-click adventure and puzzle-solving. Players explore environments, interact with characters, and solve over 100 brain teasers, ranging from mathematical and logical challenges to observation-based riddles. Instead of the 2D animated scenes from the DS era, the game transitions to a 3D chibi-style presentation, with Layton and Luke positioned at the bottom of the screen during exploration.
