[PREVIEW] Sintopia – Great Combination of Management and God Simulation

Sintopia is a darkly comedic management simulation and “god game” that puts you in the role of a newly appointed administrator of Hell. Developed by Piraknights Games and published by Team17, it blends the deep, strategic systems of management sims like Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper with the mischievous sandbox fun of a god game like Black & White.

There are a lot of mechanics to get the hang of

The game is divided into two distinct but interconnected spheres: the Overworld and the Underworld. In the Overworld, you oversee a civilization of “Humus”, which are cartoonish sentient chickpea people. As a divine entity, you can influence their lives and actions by casting spells. These spells are not overly precise, leading to chaotic and often hilarious “collateral damage.”

The goal here is to influence the Humus to commit sins, which then damns their souls to your bureaucratic administration in Hell. The game includes survival and tower defense elements, as you must protect the “Seeding Temple” from invasions by creatures like “Zhumbies” (zombified Humus) and lizards. Once a Humus dies, their soul is transported to Hell, where your main job begins.

You must manage a team of “Imployees”, mischievous minions, to process the sinful souls. This involves building roads, constructing punishment facilities, and creating an efficient, bureaucratic factory of torment. The core of this loop is to “cleanse” souls of their sins to generate Purgadollars (the currency of Hell) and then resurrect them back to the Overworld, where the cycle begins anew.

This replenishes the Humus population and resets the cycle, but also grants you Hearo Tokens, which are a crucial progression currency. These tokens are used to unlock new technologies, powerful passive abilities (Boons), and new spells, allowing you to improve your Hell factory and your influence on the Overworld. In general, this is not your typical city-builder game, adding a proper god simulator on top of it.

Solid foundation that can only improve

The game’s mechanics are surprisingly deep, requiring you to balance resource management, staffing, and logistical chains. You can even use a “soul dispatcher” system to create “if-then” logic, which automates the process of sending souls to specific punishment facilities. With Team17’s recent announcement that the game will launch with a full version in 2026 instead of entering Early Access, there’s even more to look forward to.

When it comes to graphics, Sintopia embraces a clean, colorful, and highly stylized art direction. Despite the dark, infernal theme, the visuals are lighthearted and cartoonish. The 1980s pop-culture aesthetic adds a unique, satirical touch, making Hell look less like a fiery pit of damnation and more like disorganized corporate office.

In the end, Sintopia has a solid foundation. While the demo includes a “Challenge” mode with randomized objectives, the full narrative campaign and a dedicated “Sandbox” mode are still on the roadmap. It’s a genuinely fresh and entertaining take on the management sim and god-game genres. The unique two-part gameplay, sharp humor, and charming art style create a deeply satisfying and replayable experience.
