Sandfall Interactive made several headlines last year when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the prestigious 2025 Game of the Year award. The game also helped revive interest in turn-based RPGs by mixing them with real-time reaction mechanics. After such huge success and praise, many are now asking what the small French studio could possibly be working on next.
The game stood out thanks to its dark fantasy world inspired by the Belle Époque era and a story that allowed players to form strong emotional connections with its characters. With the awards season now over, the focus has shifted to Sandfall’s future. The studio has made it clear that it does not plan to follow the usual AAA path of fast growth or safe sequels.
In recent interviews, creative director Guillaume Broche explained that Sandfall wants to stay guided by creative instinct rather than outside pressure. The team prefers to work on ideas they personally find “cool” instead of chasing market trends or fan demands. Because of this approach, their next game will likely take several years to develop, much like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
While Sandfall has confirmed that Clair Obscur is meant to become a larger franchise, fans should not expect a direct continuation of the first game’s story. Broche has hinted that Expedition was only the first chapter in a shared universe, leaving room for future games with new stories, different time periods, or even new gameplay ideas.
Work on Sandfall’s next project has already begun, but details remain secret. The studio describes it as something unique, shaped by a strong personal vision. Fans are already speculating, with some hoping for soulslike elements and others wanting to see the original characters return. No matter the direction, the success of Expedition 33 has earned Sandfall Interactive a high level of trust, making their next “cool” idea one of the most anticipated reveals in the years ahead.
In any case, if you haven’t played it yet yourself, you can find the game on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC via Steam or just enjoy it on Xbox Game Pass.
