Developer SlickAmogus has released the first public version of a native PC port for the original Silent Hill, allowing players to experience Konami’s 1999 PlayStation classic without relying on emulation.

What’s particularly impressive is how complete the project already is. The entire game can reportedly be played from beginning to end, with environments, fog effects, enemies, collision detection, and most combat mechanics functioning as intended. Weapons such as the handgun, shotgun, and hunting rifle work properly, while player movement, stairs, and environmental interactions are largely stable.

Players can run the game at high resolutions, enjoy uncapped frame rates, and take advantage of high refresh rate displays, making this arguably one of the smoothest ways to revisit the horror classic. However, it’s not entirely perfect yet. Some visual effects still need work, certain audio issues remain unresolved, and the Chainsaw and Rock Drill weapons don’t currently function correctly. Ending cutscenes can also be glitchy in places.

The release is another major win for game preservation, especially considering that the original Silent Hill never officially launched on PC. While later entries in the franchise eventually arrived on the platform, the first game remained locked to PlayStation hardware for decades.
