The development studio behind Gilded Destiny has released a new dev diary discussing the event system. They also recently launched a pre-alpha build for a selected group of 100 testers from the Kickstarter and Modeon backers. The title is available on Steam.

The game’s event system is inspired by classic strategy games, especially those developed by Nintendo and Paradox Studios. The development team believes that a good system should reflect historical depth and allow for unexpected outcomes. This approach helps Gilded Destiny incorporate both real and alternative historical paths in an engaging way.

The system is built around two main ideas: conditions and effects. Events trigger when certain conditions are met, and each player choice leads to different effects. This structure allows the game to portray complex historical scenarios, such as political assassinations or diplomatic alliances, that might not be fully covered by the core mechanics.

When designing events, the team follows several key principles:

  • Freedom of choice: Players can make any decision, even a “bad” one. Sometimes these choices reflect real historical outcomes, adding realism and depth.
  • Quality over quantity: As a small team, they focus on doing a few things exceptionally well rather than spreading resources too thin. This ensures every event feels meaningful and impactful.
  • Meaningful consequences: Every decision has significant results, boosting replayability. Players must consider the long-term implications of their choices.

In the game, decisions and events differ. Decisions are player-initiated actions, such as declaring war, that require specific conditions and are fully controlled by the player. Events, on the other hand, are triggered dynamically and cannot be directly controlled. For example, if another nation declares war, a chain of events is triggered for the nation affected.

Although it’s impossible to include every alternate history scenario, the goal is to create key moments where players can explore “what if” situations. These parts of the event system allow players and future modders to craft unique timelines. The system’s flexibility ensures the community can expand the game with their own historical twists.
