Courtney Liessen, a veteran game developer with over two decades of experience, has launched Reality Break, a sci-fi action RPG roguelite that introduces a unique “Rewrite” mechanic. After working on renowned titles such as Age of Mythology, Halo Wars, and Orcs Must Die, Courtney ventured into indie game development. Now available in its 1.0 version on Steam, this game combines fast-paced action, deep customization, and an innovative progression system.

In Reality Break, you will dive into a sci-fi world where you can “Rewrite” different aspects of the game to suit your playstyle. This mechanic allows you to modify items, missions, and even abilities. For instance, you can erase negative effects from items or even turn them into useful bonuses. You can also change the type of a mission to yield better rewards or reduce skill cooldowns to make them more powerful.

The game also features the “Break” system, which functions as a prestige mechanic. By resetting their profile, players earn a metagame currency that they can spend on talents. These talents alter the fundamental aspects of the game, offering new ways to play and progress. The core combat is inspired by Diablo 3, with fast movements and dynamic action, while the metagame progression draws elements from incremental games, for deep and long-term rewarding upgrades.

When asked which features she would like to add to the game, Courtney replied: “I would say online multiplayer and a large, explorable open-world space environment are two features I would absolutely love to add to Reality Break or a future game in this franchise, though they present a challenge right now. I’ve worked on similar things before, and they require a surprising amount of time and attention to get right.”
