Studio Ephua has announced In Ashes, a fantasy visual novel where every choice shapes destiny. The story follows a weary former hero confronting his past while trying to find meaning in the life he left behind. Every word, relationship, and decision will determine whether the protagonist reclaims the hero he once was — or forges an entirely new path.
Inspired by works such as Frieren, the books of Robin Hobb, The Witcher series, and Arthurian legends, In Ashes offers a deeply narrative experience exploring themes of exhaustion, sacrifice, and personal recovery. The story begins in the quiet town of Hwen, where the main character enjoys a life of peace until the return of a familiar face pulls him back into the world he tried to escape.
In Ashes features a robust customization system and deep mechanics. Players can define the protagonist’s name, pronouns, and personality — directly influencing how other characters perceive them. With nine distinct skills, the game allows for unique playstyles, where every choice unlocks new dialogue options, combat behaviors, and challenges.
Moreover, tactical combat with fast decision-making carries real consequences. The Valour system rewards consistency in choices that reflect the character’s values, while complex companions bring their own pasts, secrets, and ambitions that enrich the story. The game promises multiple endings, with final outcomes shaped by moral dilemmas, relationships, and the chosen path.
In Ashes will be available for PC via Steam.
