Football Manager 2024 (FM24) will soon be available on all current consoles, PC, and mobile devices. The release date is planned for October 6th, and for two weeks now, we’ve had the opportunity to play the title in Steam Early Access, which has created a certain hype because FM24 promises a lot. It offers an improved and impressive experience both on and off the pitch.
Whether it will realize all its potential remains to be seen after the official launch. Although this iteration is the last in the series before the anticipated Project Dragonfly, which will bring a major overhaul to the franchise with a new engine and a large set of changes, FM24 will surprise you with significant upgrades to the match engine and gameplay mechanics.
Sports Interactive, the developer behind the game, introduced a groundbreaking “motion-matching” system that enhances the authenticity of the on-field action. This system seamlessly incorporates animations from the game’s database, resulting in smoother player transitions and more realistic off-the-ball movements. Additionally, an updated ball physics system adds realism to effects like friction, spin, and deflection of a shot, leading to unpredictable moments during matches.

FM24 also comes with improved graphics, including enhanced lighting and sharper textures. While the game’s visual fidelity may not match cutting-edge standards, its fluid gameplay this year more than compensates for any shortcomings. The gameplay mechanics have also drawn attention, with the introduction of positional play and inverted full-backs.
This innovation allows certain players, such as Advanced Playmakers, to adjust their positions when in possession, increasing passing options and facilitating smooth ball progression. Inverted full-backs, on the other hand, assume a more central defensive role when their team is in possession. Sports Interactive used Kyle Walker from Manchester City as an example: although he is listed as a right-back on paper, he adopts the role of a third central defender while occasionally moving forward.
Furthermore, Football Manager 2024 introduces two important quality-of-life features. First, players can now transfer their saved files from FM23 to FM24, allowing for seamless continuity in their managerial careers. Second, the game offers players three starting options: Original, Real World, and Your World, each providing unique gameplay scenarios and challenges. For example, in the Real World mode, transfers will be completed at the time they occurred in real life, so Jude Bellingham won’t be at Real Madrid at the very start of your career but will join later.
The Japanese league also returns with licensed players and clubs, and the ways transfers are conducted will be improved with the help of the Transfer Room and Intermediaries. For instance, if you want to sell one of your players but their agent is not cooperating or the offers don’t meet your expectations, you can hire an Intermediary to help facilitate the player’s sale.
This is only one part of what FM24 offers; in fact, there are a lot of new changes and features, but perhaps it’s best to judge for yourself what this game is like once you successfully play through an entire season.
