Today marks an anniversary for Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, a game that hit the shelves in Europe 21 years ago. On December 10, 2004 the PS2 version of this updated installment of the Guilty Gear XX series became available to European players.

When #Reload arrived, it wasn’t just a re-release, it represented a refined, improved version of what fans already knew from Guilty Gear XX. The developers (Arc System Works) and publishers (for Europe, Zoo Digital Publishing) took the foundation of the earlier game and improved it: balancing for high-level fighting, more polished mechanics, and expanded modes.

One of the signature improvements of #Reload was giving a previously hidden character Robo-Ky full playable status from the start. Along with that came better balance across the whole character roster, revised move sets, and adjustments that made competitive fighting more fair and strategic.

Also, #Reload expanded how the game could be played: beyond standard versus matches, players had access to multiple game modes: story mode, survival mode with many levels, mission mode, and more, giving both casual and serious players a chance to enjoy the game on their own terms.

Visually and technically, the game maintained the distinctive style of the Guilty Gear series: detailed 2D sprites, flashy special moves, and an energetic soundtrack while combining that with smoother performance on PS2. For many European players in 2004, this meant their first proper experience of this updated version on home console.
