Cellar Door Games, the team behind the Rogue Legacy series, has revealed its next game: Neath, a roguelike strategy RPG coming to PC on Steam in 2026. This new title marks a big change in both style and gameplay for the studio.

Neath takes on a darker look and a new strategic format, unlike the fast action of Cellar Door’s earlier games. Kenny Lee, the co-founder and lead programmer, said the team drew ideas from games like Into the Breach and board games like Mansions of Madness. He explained that making Neath pushed them out of their comfort zone, with both the tone and gameplay feeling new for them.

Combat in Neath is turn-based, but the turn order keeps changing. Players can control both allies and enemies, giving them a lot of power over how fights unfold. The “engagement-locking” system plays a major role, when enemies target your team, fear holds your characters in place, and only breaking the enemy’s hold can free them.

Outside of battles, the roguelike structure means each run is different. You will explore areas shown in a classic 90s dungeon-crawler style, unlocking new skills and challenges as you go. The game lets you “Defy Fate” using things like the “Fate’s Die” to influence gods, open trapped chests safely, or twist destiny, but messing with fate may come with a price.

As players climb higher, they build a party, learn new skills, and find old relics that create strange combos. Between runs, you can also grow the small town of Shale. By managing its people, you can focus on certain abilities and change your playstyle before heading back into the tower.
