Microsoft is intensely preparing and securing its own future with its next generation of Xbox consoles. As revealed by insider Jez Corden on the Xbox Two podcast, the new console allegedly features hardware backward compatibility. This means that games from earlier Xbox platforms will be able to run without any need for emulation. This move clearly shows Microsoft’s commitment to preserving its gaming legacy, while simultaneously promising “the biggest technical leap” in Xbox history.

Corden clarified that the console’s chip is designed to natively support games from the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This, notably, refers to titles that are already part of Microsoft’s backward compatibility program. This practically means that players will be able to simply take out their old discs or digital libraries and enjoy them on the new hardware without any issues.

Microsoft also promises that the next Xbox will deliver a traditional console experience, faithful to the “plug-and-play” principle that fans appreciate. Despite social media rumors about a potential shift toward PC features, Corden confirmed that the console will not integrate Steam. Instead, the focus remains on developing a powerful, standalone gaming device that “pushes technical boundaries.”

In addition to the console itself, Microsoft is actively exploring new ways to expand the Xbox ecosystem. At the recent Xbox Games Showcase during Summer Game Fest, they introduced third-party handheld devices: the Xbox ROG Ally X and ROG Ally, developed in partnership with ASUS. As is known, these devices are closer to PC gaming but offer portable ways to play Xbox titles. However, the next-generation console remains the central part of their “This is an Xbox” strategy.
