Nine years ago today, in 2016, Final Fantasy XV launched worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was one of the most anticipated entries in the franchise, arriving after a long development cycle and years of speculation. When it finally reached players around the world, it delivered something very different from past games: a modern road-trip adventure built on friendship, open-world exploration, and a more action-focused battle system.
Final Fantasy XV follows Noctis, the young prince of Lucis, on a journey that starts as a simple trip with his closest friends Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto. What begins as a casual drive soon becomes a fight for their kingdom and their future. The bond between the four main characters became one of the game’s strongest elements, giving the story a grounded and emotional core.
The world of Eos was another major part of its appeal. Players were free to drive across long highways, explore open fields, battle monsters, and take on a wide range of quests. The shift toward an open-world design marked a bold step for the series, offering players more freedom than ever before. The real-time combat system, which allowed players to move across the battlefield and chain attacks with allies, gave the game a fast pace that set it apart from earlier Final Fantasy titles.
Its launch was followed by years of updates, DLC episodes, and expanded story content. While some of the planned additions were never completed, the post-launch support reflected how ambitious the game’s vision had been from the start. Even through its uneven development history, many fans grew attached to its characters, setting, and themes of loyalty, fate, and sacrifice.
