PCSX2 2.8.0 launched on August 28th, 2026, bringing substantial performance and graphics improvements to the long-running PlayStation 2 emulator alongside several user-facing additions.

The development team has updated PCSX2’s graphics pipeline with support for the PlayStation 2’s AA1 anti-aliasing method and Rasterizer Ordered Views. An optional draw-buffering system can also dramatically reduce draw calls and render passes in certain games, including Need for Speed: Carbon, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Underground 2.

Direct3D 12 is now the default renderer for most modern Nvidia and AMD graphics cards on Windows, while Direct3D 11 has been classified as a legacy option. The developers have also raised the emulator’s recommended system requirements to reflect the additional processing power needed by its newer graphical features and accuracy improvements.

Beyond performance, PCSX2 now offers full EyeToy camera support across Windows, Linux and macOS. Support has also been expanded for train controllers and several Olympus storage devices.

Other additions include greater control over the on-screen display, redesigned achievement menus, cover-art downloads through Big Picture mode and desktop shortcuts with custom icons. Windows users can now capture video without separately downloading FFmpeg, as the necessary components are bundled with the emulator.

The installer has received a visual overhaul with dark mode support, while the main interface can display GPU usage, the active renderer and internal resolution. PCSX2 2.8.0 arrives nearly six months after version 2.6.0 and two years after the emulator’s major Qt-based 2.0 release.
