[Preview] Band of Crusaders – Dark Medieval Strategy RPG with Big Ambition

Band of Crusaders is a dark medieval strategy RPG set in a cruel world full of demons, corruption, and desperate people trying to survive. You play as the Grandmaster of a small order of crusaders. Your job is to build a camp, recruit new fighters, manage food and supplies, and lead your group into dangerous battles. The game mixes tactical combat, character progression, and open-world exploration, aiming to create a long campaign shaped by your choices.

This is where Band of Crusaders will definitely hook you in. It’s a nice surprise, not only for its ambition but for the sheer amount of content it introduces, content that will overwhelm you without a doubt. This isn’t your typical strategy RPG; it’s a game where every choice truly matters. While the narrative told through written dialogue might not be anything special, every death, every resource, and every moment spent on the massive map of France carries significant value.

Shaping Your Crusaders

The game allows you to shape your crusaders however you want. There are no strict classes. Instead, the weapons and abilities you choose define their role. You can build heavily armored knights, quick fighters, or archers. The camp you build also reflects your choices. You upgrade buildings, unlock new tools, heal your wounded crusaders, and try to keep everyone prepared for the next mission.

When you enter a fight, time slows down, giving you room to think without stopping the action completely. This system makes every fight feel unique and tense. Positioning matters, timing matters, and using your crusaders together makes a big difference. Losing a crusader feels heavy because death is permanent, and your veterans are often the backbone of your group.

Every knight has a unique set of skills, and each weapon possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses. For example, blunt damage might be more effective against heavily armored enemies. Personally, I didn’t like this complexity; it adds even more chaos to already overwhelming combat and can definitely become tedious during 10-vs-10 battles.

Furthermore, using skills and abilities was confusing. They are categorized by specific hotkeys (numbers) assigned to each unit, which makes it hard to be certain if you’ve clicked correctly or if your Crusader will actually execute the ability. While the ability to pause the action at any time is certainly helpful in this regard, it doesn’t solve the core issue with the controls.

Deep Dive into the Grim World

One of the strongest parts of Band of Crusaders is its world. The setting mixes real medieval history with horror and folklore. The world reacts to what you do, and continuous events appear as you explore. Because of this, the game feels alive. You never know what you might find on the road or which disaster might strike your camp next. The grim tone fits well with the theme of a dying land overrun by evil forces.

However, Band of Crusaders also has clear weaknesses. Although crusaders can die permanently, it was fairly easy to recruit new ones, which reduced the emotional weight of losing a veteran. If recovering from losses is too easy, battles lose their importance. If recovering becomes too hard, the game might feel punishing. How the developers balance this will decide whether the campaign feels fair or frustrating.

There is also the risk of repetition. Because the game relies heavily on its sandbox system, some missions and battles could feel similar over time. Enemy variety, event variety, and world structure all need to stay new to keep players interested across a long campaign. This is especially important in a strategy RPG where you may spend dozens of hours on one run.

Based on my experience so far, this will not be an easy game. As mentioned, you must manage food, health, and tools for equipment repair. While each city offers various side quests, you also have the main story to follow. It will definitely be important to balance your crusaders and their respective skills, making the formation of an ideal fighting group crucial for success.

Promising, Ambitious Strategy RPG

In the end, Band of Crusaders is a game built on ambition. If the final release properly expands the story, improves variety, and works on the balance, it could become a standout title in the strategy RPG genre. For now, it is a promising but uncertain project, full of good ideas that need careful execution. It is a game to watch closely, especially for fans of dark medieval worlds and tough tactical combat. Having invested more than two hours in the demo, I am greatly looking forward to the full release of this game.

You can play the demo right now on GOG, whereas the demo on Steam will be available December 4th.
