Today marks a special date for fans of the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Exactly ten years ago, on December 10, 2015, the game was released worldwide on PC via Steam.

When the PC version launched, it completed the availability of the trilogy on Steam, bringing to PC players the final chapter of the Final Fantasy XIII saga. The developers, Square Enix, made sure to include almost all of the downloadable content (DLC) that had been released for the console version: costumes, weapons, and extras, except for one specific outfit.

In Lightning Returns, players control the heroine Lightning as the sole playable character. The game world is designed to be open and freely explorable: you can traverse varied terrain, climb, jump, and reach nearly anything you see on screen without loading screens, unless you teleport or use a vehicle.

Gameplay in Lightning Returns moves away from the more traditional, turn-based style of many older RPGs. Instead, it features a more action-oriented combat system, giving you direct control over Lightning as she battles enemies in real time. The PC version supports modern features: adjustable graphics options, higher frame rates, and support for modern display resolutions, making the experience smoother and visually richer than the original console release.

Even after a decade, Lightning Returns on PC still stands as a solid and often beloved way to experience the conclusion of the Final Fantasy XIII saga. For longtime fans, it offered a chance to revisit Lightning’s final journey with updated graphics. For newer players on PC, it provided a full JRPG adventure with a mix of freedom, urgency, and action.
