Research Reveals Which Nation Spends the Most on Gaming

A new study and research by the analytics firm Newzoo has revealed that American gamers spend the most money on video games. With an average annual expenditure of $324.9, Americans are significantly ahead of their European counterparts.

In comparison, European gamers spend an average of $125.4 annually. Despite the fact that the U.S. and Europe combined make up 20% of the global gaming population, their combined share of global spending reaches a remarkable 46%.

The research also delved into specific spending habits within Europe, showing a clear breakdown of where money is being spent.

  • 28% of players purchase gaming content when it is on sale.
  • 21% spend money on in-game currencies and add-ons.
  • 20% use subscriptions.
  • 18% buy in-game equipment.

The data highlights the major role of microtransactions in generating revenue. Microtransactions account for 42% of PC game revenue and an even higher 52% of console game revenue in Europe.

Although Europe is the second-largest continent by number of gamers with 264 million players (behind Asia’s 732 million), it also has the second-slowest annual growth rate in its gaming population, just behind the U.S.The global video game market is estimated to be worth $189 billion, marking a 3.4% increase from 2024.
