Chronicles: Medieval is an upcoming RPG that drew significant attention at last month’s Summer Game Fest. It appears to be a true competitor to Mount & Blade: Bannerlord due to its ambitious approach to sandbox gameplay set in a medieval world. In a recent FAQ, War Power Games shared new information about the game’s mechanics, stories, and features, revealing how players will explore, fight, and shape their own destiny.
The game doesn’t offer a traditional open world but instead a map gradually explored from a bird’s-eye view, where you freely navigate available regions. This map hides points of interest such as settlements, battlefields, and camps. Additionally, Raw Power Games is developing a layered Fog of War system: unexplored areas remain completely hidden, outdated regions carry the risk of new threats, while regions within sight display accurate information.

Instead of a linear story, Chronicles: Medieval features dynamic worlds based on historical periods, such as the Hundred Years’ War or the Black Death. You choose the historical context, within which you encounter tasks of varying length and complexity. These tasks offer meaningful choices that affect your character and the world around you, letting you forge your own destiny. Interactions with powerful factions through diplomacy or reputation allow you to rise within political circles.
Character development is based on a use-based skill development system, where skills improve through practice. The more you use a sword, the better you become at swordsmanship; frequent archery makes you more accurate. Perk points let you tailor your playstyle and unlock new abilities. Beyond combat skills, you train troops, engage in diplomacy, and climb the social ladder.
You have the freedom to choose different roles such as bandit, merchant, knight, mercenary, or army commander, though in Early Access the most developed content will focus on the commander role. Battles combine strategic planning and third-person action with three layers:
For diplomacy- or trade-oriented players, an auto-resolve system offers realistic battle outcomes.
Combat is a key element, with an emphasis on fluidity. The motion-warping system helps you land accurate hits, adjusting to slight misalignments, while an optional lock-on mode lets you focus on individual enemies. Working with HEMA expert Björn Rüther, the team aims for realistic medieval combat details. As characters progress, new techniques unlock, replacing basic moves with more advanced ones.
Chronicles: Medieval supports co-op play in custom battles, with plans to expand co-op to the full campaign after release. War Power Games emphasizes this isn’t a medieval life simulator but a sandbox focused on dynamic storytelling and replayability. Mod support will be available from day one, with tools developed alongside the modding community.
The game will be available on PC via Steam in 2026.
